What you need depends on what you're driving. Here's a simple checklist for test days and experiences.
For a car test day
You need approved race kit. Your championship's regulations, and the circuit, set the standards it must meet, so check them if you're buying.
- Helmet to a current approved standard, in good condition and the right size.
- Head and neck restraint (FHR), such as a HANS device, which most car racing requires, with the right posts on your helmet.
- Race suit, fireproof underwear (top, long johns, socks and balaclava), race boots and race gloves, all to an approved standard.
- Your ID, and your licence if you have one.
No kit yet? You can hire it when you book a Karat test day, and you're seat-fitted before you drive.
For a kart test day
- Kart helmet to an approved standard, kart suit, gloves, boots and a rib protector (strongly recommended, and compulsory for younger drivers in many classes).
- A neck brace is common in karting.
For a driving experience
- Comfortable clothes and flat, thin-soled shoes (trainers are fine; no boots or heels).
- Photo ID, and your driving licence if the experience page asks for it.
- Helmets are provided. Every driver gives their details and signs a short declaration before the day, from the link we send.
Useful extras
- Water and food. It's a long and physical day.
- Layers and waterproofs. Paddocks are cold and wet more often than not.
- Sun cream and sunglasses in summer.
- A notebook, for what you learn in each session.
- Earplugs for between sessions.
Before you go
- Check the arrival time and paddock details in your booking.
- Have a good night's sleep and avoid alcohol the night before.
- Tell us about any medical condition that might matter on track.
