Supercar experience or track day? Which is right for you

The difference between a supercar driving experience, an open track day and a race car test day: who each suits, what you need and what to expect.

"A day on track" can mean several quite different things. Here's how the three main options compare, so you can pick the right one, or the right gift.

Supercar driving experience

You drive a supercar on a real circuit for a set number of laps or miles, with an instructor beside you who shows you the lines and braking points.

  • Who it suits: anyone who wants to drive a supercar properly, first-timers included. A great gift.
  • What you need: no racing licence or race kit. Just your details, a short declaration before the day, and sometimes a driving licence (the experience page says).
  • What to expect: a briefing, your runs with the instructor, and time to watch others. You can buy for a group of friends and choose a date that suits you.

Karat's experiences list what's included and the dates on sale. You can also buy a gift voucher.

Open track day

A circuit is open to road-legal cars, usually your own, for open sessions. You drive at your own pace with other cars on track, under the circuit's rules.

  • Who it suits: drivers with their own suitable car who want to drive it on track.
  • What you need: your own car in good condition and the right insurance (normal road insurance usually doesn't cover the track), a helmet, and to meet the circuit's noise and safety rules.
  • What to expect: lots of track time, but you're responsible for your car.

Race car test day

You drive a real race car (a kart, single-seater, GT car or similar) with an engineer and a mechanic, working on your driving with data and video.

  • Who it suits: racing drivers and people who want to become one.
  • What you need: approved race kit (or hire it), and sometimes a race licence, depending on the circuit and car. See our licences guide.
  • What to expect: a plan, several sessions, and a debrief after each one. Read what a test day involves.
